Scottish Design Show venue: City Halls Glasgow

PR: Scottish Design Show set to map out Scotland’s Future
‘Architecture and Planning event to provide a unique insight into Scotland’s landscape in 2020’

The inaugural Scottish Design Show will bring together politicians, academics, public agencies, the private sector and the public to discuss and debate the development of Scotland’s urban and rural landscape. With a varied programme aimed at local governments, masterplanners, architects and developers, this event will provide an opportunity for individuals to grasp a better understanding of the country’s infrastructure, planning and master-planning proposals and the role of design in the development process.

The two-day show opens on 6 October and runs until 7 October at Glasgow’s Tramway Theatre. It will feature a robust programme of lectures, master classes, workshops and debates.

Thu 6 Oct
Scotland’s Future Cities, an in-depth discussion on the future of Scotland’s urban centres from leading regeneration expert, Professor Stuart Gulliver. With his experiences at the Glasgow Development Agency, working on projects such as the Glasgow Science Centre and Crown Street Regeneration, Stuart will provide a fascinating insight into Scotland’s economic trends and shifting demographics, and their impact on infrastructure, investment and policy.

Is the Future Tartan? Will follow in this theme as James Woodhuysen, Professor of Forecasting and Innovation at De Montfort University, Trevor Davies from Edinburgh City Council and Ian Wall from the EDI will discuss the kind of initiative’s Scotland will need to engage in to ensure its economic and cultural development over the next 15 years.

Mapping Out Scotland’s Future
The Scottish Executive is using the Scottish Design Show to launch an innovative new project that will illustrate some of Scotland’s major future developments. Planners at the Scottish Executive have pulled together contributions from a range of local authorities, developers and architects, using 3D and landscape visualisation to provide an exciting visualisation of how Scotland will look in 2020.

Who Needs A Design Guru? Is a question many design professional ask themselves. This session will look at the role and purpose of design champions and architectural promotion agencies like the newly formed Architecture and Design Scotland. The leading design guru’s in Scotland will be brought together on one platform to discuss their role and their impact. Edinburgh City Council’s Riccardo Marini, Architecture and Design Scotland’s Raymond Young and Gerry Grams, Glasgow’s new design champion.

The Architecture of Belonging will attempt to identify the wider factors that contribute to the creation of good places and the psychological attachments associated with public spaces.

Inspiration
Leading architecture figures are set to inspire at the show by presenting and discussing their most notable projects and the design processes employed. A series of Master Classes will run throughout the duration of the the two days, with Amin Taha, Anthony Hunt, Isi Metzstein and Patrik Schumacher all set to appear. Patrik Schumaker is a director at Zaha Hadid and the project architect for the new proposed museum for Glasgow Harbour.

Leading Scottish architects from Elder & Cannon, Reiach & Hall and Richard Murphy Architects will also give a series of presentations on their most recent work and the approach of their practice.

The show will draw to a close with a bit of blue sky thinking as four designers are invited to invent buildings, designs and initiatives that they think can dramatically improve the life of Scotland. With ideas solicited from the audience, Imaging the Future is for those that entertain ambitious plans for the future.

Workshops
Professional organisations, manufacturers and public bodies will give presentations on a variety of topics, providing attendees with an insight into current movements and trends in their areas of expertise. Clydebank Rebuilt, Scope Bathroom Interiors, Institute of Engineers, MacRoberts Solicitors, Grosvenor (Pacific Quay) and Historic Scotland will all be in attendance.

Exhibitions
The Scottish Design Show will also provide a platform for numerous exhibitions, which will be open throughout the event. The 100 Best Buildings will feature the very best buildings built in Scotland in the last 50 years, chosen by a panel of leading architects, and is set to provoke debate.

The show also sees the welcome return of the controversial Carbuncle Awards which seeks to name and shame Scotland’s Most Disappointing Building and Most Dismal Town. The exhibition will be unveiled at the Scottish Design Show, announcing the shortlisted contenders for the least wanted prize in Architecture.
