Maldron Hotel Shoreditch, England
A new hotel on Paul St in Shoreditch, east London has opened as Maldron Hotel Shoreditch, with architectural design by Jestico + Whiles.
Paul Street traverses the architecturally diverse area between Old Street’s Silicon Roundabout tech hub and the vibrant nightlife and galleries of Shoreditch. Once dominated by Victorian and Edwardian warehouses and carpentry workshops, the area is becoming a hospitality hotspot.
The new 157 key, 10 storey hotel regenerates a site that had been vacant for over half a century. The hotel design slots into the established, organic urban rhythm of Paul Street, where buildings ‘step down’ in height from north to south from the area’s newly-established, pedestrianised epicentre at Leonard Circus. It fills a long-standing gap in the terrace, restitching the broken streetscape and adding further energy to this flourishing creative and social quarter.
At street level, a visually open, publicly accessible restaurant and café invigorates a part of Paul Street previously defined only by private office entrances.
The building’s layered, rhythmic front elevation, which recedes at its upper levels, is crafted for appreciation both head-on and at an angle, its faceted façade folding and unfolding alongside the pedestrian’s journey. The façade’s folded form unlocks a different framed view from every hotel room, capturing the charm of bay windows and window seats. Generous glazed openings in bronze frames echo the large windows characteristic of the area’s historic warehouses.
Modern construction methods reflect an evolved vernacular that speaks both to Shoreditch’s history and its present-day spirit. The glazed façade shimmers with reflections, capturing glimpses of its surroundings in fleeting moments, while a reconstituted stone framework establishes a grounding counterpoint, lending structure and depth. The stone’s warm ochre tone echoes the familiar London stock brick of Shoreditch, and is embossed with an abstract wood grain, a subtle homage to crown cut timber. This motif, along with “bird’s mouth’ joints at every junction and brass finials and window frames, reference the legacy of joinery and furniture-making in the area.
Committed to sustainability, the car-free hotel incorporates a fabric-first approach, on-site generation of hot water and electricity, high-efficiency lighting, and roof-mounted photovoltaic panels, all contributing to its BREEAM Excellent rating.
Jestico + Whiles won the planning permission for this building, with Hackney Planning describing the design as “a bold architectural gesture which is high quality and considered to be a positive addition within this varied local context.”
James Dilley, Director at Jestico + Whiles, said: “Led by an exciting guest journey into and through the hotel, this is a subtle but dynamic urban intervention that successfully restitches a long-neglected site in an important historical streetscape. We are delighted to see it adding further activation to this exciting quarter of London.”
