Halic Shipyards Istanbul

After the Istanbul based office already won the WAF X Award (Future Project WAFX – Cultural Identity) for its recomposing of the Atatürk Cultural Center, another project of TA_ was now announced as ‘highly commended’ at this year’s World Architecture Festival in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam/Istanbul – Yesterday, the new Shipyard Project of Tabanlioğlu Architects was honored as highly commended in the category ‘Future Projects – Commercial Mixed Use’ at this year’s World Architecture Festival. With its new project at the Golden Horn in Istanbul, TA_ wants to reclaim the identity of this area by redesigning the waterfront.

Throughout the history, the Golden Horn has been Istanbul’s inner harbor. During the Republican Period, it became a natural port for merchant vessels and warships, and at the same time a shipyard zone. After 1960s, the region lost its charm under the pressure of socio-economic conditions and became a commercial and industrial center.

The new project that houses marinas, hotels, housing, offices and leisure areas will respect and protect the symbolic silhouette of old Istanbul. All new and renovated structures dedicated to various functions will integrate in skyline and in harmony with the existing urban texture. By the rational organization of city/landscape and life/space relations, the major objective is to regain the coastal area as a plus value, which is now derelict.

Every building constitutes an example of unique design attuned with the existing fabric and colors of the district. Another main architectural approach is to ensure that the Golden Horn shoreline opens to citizens as a meeting point of Istanbul and re-gaining its high life standards as a residential and recreational district.

TA_ was founded in 1990 by Murat Tabanlioglu and his father, Dr. Hayati Tabanlioglu.
